BY HEALTHY EATING
We are all well aware of the value of eating healthily. Having the right diet, enjoying the life we all want, keeping the energy levels up and being able to do the things we love can be challenging. However, it is not all about the physical benefits of a healthy diet. Eating the right food can also have a positive impact on your mental well-being too.
The reality is that mental health and physical health are interconnected. If you eat too little, or too much of the wrong thing, then you will suffer both physically and psychologically for it. Your brain needs nourishment just as much as your body, and a lack of protein in your diet can result in the onset or aggravation of depression.
If you suffer from depression, one of the main negative impacts of the condition is a feeling lethargic, a situation which unfortunately affects your ability to deal with the mental illness. Eating the right things is important, and while often those with depression will feel that they don't desire to eat anything, it's important that they try to get some kind of sustenance. Rather than eating “comfort foods” – which is rarely very comforting – eating fresh fruit and veg, and carbohydrates from pasta or potatoes can help.
Drinking plenty of fluid is also vital for mental health. Ideally, five glasses or more of water daily will stop you from becoming dehydrated and depriving your body and mind of that very important fuel. Having the energy and the sharpness to send the symptoms of depression packing is essential, and your diet will play a big part in this.
